Hands

An interdisciplinary Jam session

Resonant Hands is a live, interdisciplinary performance that brings together a musician/sound artist, a hand-craftsperson—such as a wood carver or sculptor—and a live visual creator in an improvisational dialogue between their respective mediums. The project explores the dynamic interplay of sound, physical craft, and visual art, creating a real-time feedback loop where each participant responds to and influences the others’ work. This triadic collaboration blurs the boundaries between disciplines, fostering an immersive and evolving creative process. At its core, Resonant Hands is about connection—between artists, mediums, and audiences. The craftsperson’s physical actions generate sounds—such as the scraping of tools or rhythmic carving—that are captured and integrated into the musician’s evolving soundscape. These organic sounds are sampled and manipulated live to become part of the composition. Simultaneously, the craftsperson allows the music to guide their creative process, letting its rhythms and tones influence their work. The live visual creator adds another layer of interaction by using live video sources, synthesized imagery, and dynamic lighting to reflect and amplify this interplay. Their visuals respond to both the craftsperson’s movements and the soundscape, creating a constantly shifting environment where all three mediums inform one another. The performances are long-running to allow the craftsperson to complete an entire piece during the event. Audience members are invited to experience Resonant Hands as they would a gallery installation—free to come and go throughout or return for multiple viewings. This format encourages viewers to witness different stages of the creative process, shifting focus from finished works to the act of creation itself. By observing how sound, craft, and visuals evolve together in real-time, audiences gain a deeper appreciation for the connections between these mediums.
